Looky what shows up in my FB feed from a local auction house.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Looks pretty decent in the pictures. Been stored for many years and doesn’t run.

I jokingly showed it to my wife.

“I couldn’t daily drive that, the seats are all messed up”

Me:. “No problem, we can just get them reupholstered in a cool clothe pattern”

She raises an eyebrow and says “ we’ll just have to see high it goes”.

Is there a normal link to the auction site? I know a little about these, I could let you know my opinion.

They are very good cars, but values aren’t high and restoration costs are - and like all cars of the era, they can have a penchant for rust.    At a grand, there’s no real risk, but one would need to pick their battles.

Let me know what you think.  I'm thinking $3500 for a non running sedan if it's not a rust bucket.  But I don't know anything about this market.

It looks pretty correct - interior bits appear original and maybe in decent shape. Engine is correct and appears complete, and as you can see, this car is a 4 on the tree (MB wouldn’t have an in-house automatic until 1962, I believe, and this car isn’t a Hydrak).

Rust is the concern. Check rockers, floors, trunk, cowl area, door bottoms, windshield pillars. For a non-runner, I’d want to be even cheaper, and that’s with an unstuck engine that only needs TLC. Parts can be quite expensive. If it’s really rust-free, no damage, maybe try for the $2500 region, and hope you are a DIYer - a restoration will run in the red. These are the kind of cars where you can spend 50K to get 20K in return. Maybe $3500 all-in if it is really nice and you think you could get it running without professional help .

On the pro side, they drive wonderfully when they are sorted, and are pretty stylish and unique - mine gets a lot of attention. A cut and polish, interior detail (including wood) and some chrome cleaning might make it a star. Set it off with some nice period style wide whites, and it will be a gem.

Thanks for the input. This would be mostly DIY. I wouldn’t want a concourse restoration.

I have a feeling this is going to be bid up way more than it's worth and it will sit in another barn until the next estate sale.

It could be within redemption, but you’d want to tread with care.  Definitely inspect before bidding.  These can be found as runners in the 5-6K range, I think, and really nice ones seldom exceed 15K on this side of the pond. Lots of car for the money.

You could be right about the bids - people think these are worth a lot more than they are in r eality.

Hmmmm. I think there is more rather more car than less here. And it’s only 200 miles from me.....

1. The tag is orange, which would be ‘15, which is consistent with the tire’ s condition . To me that means the car was maintained, driven till recently and the engine is ok. Anybody who kept this car in this condition did not wreck the engine. My opinion is non starting has more to do with bad gas than engine problems.

2.

2. The body and chrome look reasonably straight. To me that means somebody maintained it.

3. The interior looks clean, the leather looks very good and somebody went to the effort to put carpet on the floor. Another plus.

4. 70,ooo miles is a plus.

My feeling is this is probably the cleanest, cheapest 200s you will ever see. I suspect the body would clean up nicely and that car has never been stored outdoors in its life.

Here is a comparable for $4500. This car is a lot better. https://classiccars.com/listings/view/1121034/1963-mercedes-benz-220-for-sale-in-cadillac-michigan-49601

Good eye on the tag. I'm also guessing this never saw winter driving, otherwise it would be dust by now.  I'm going to watch this one closely.

Carpets, clean non decayed seats, newer tires, suggests that somebody cared for this one. Granted, you will probably have to address the hydraulics and the brake hoses and other consumables that probably date to the Kennedy era. But if you are halfway handy or have a good supportive shop nearby it might prove to be a good basis for a driver grade restoration.

Look at it this way, it’s gotta be a better investment than a boat......

I have about 3500 sq ft of free space at my warehouse that I’m not using for work that’s just itching for a lift to be put in. If this goes cheap enough, it would be a fun car to mess  around with.

And don't get me started on boats. That's another one that you need diy skills or you will be bankrupt in short order.

So... Anybody here a Bidder? Seems like a good deal at $2900.

I bid the $2600 and $2800. I didn’t get the chance to go inspect it since we had a nice warm day and I needed to get some roof repairs done on my warehouse. If I could have confirmed that it wasn’t a rust bucket, I might have gone higher. The bidders were me and one other guy, which raised red flags in my mind.  I'm sure other people looked at it in person, and they all decided to get out in the low $2ks.

But really, I already have two projects on my plate and didn't really need a third unless it was stupid cheap. And over $3k including auction fees wasn't cheap enough.

Thanks for the reply. I agree with your logic. Pictures do not show the smell of 2 years of rodents or the frozen block...... There are always others.
